VI.a

Pulmonary embolism - Venous thromboembolism

Encompasses pulmonary embolism. A cause-and-effect relationship may be difficult to establish since the background rate of unexplained venous and pulmonary embolism is substantial. Epidemiologic studies are supportive (PMID 25924683). A search for antiphospholipid antibodies is indicated. Chronic DI thromboembolism may lead to thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (PMID 24881082)
